FAQs
Find answers to the most common questions about managing your WFU WordPress site. If you don’t see your question here, submit a request at go.wfu.edu/webrequest.
Getting Help
Use the web request form at go.wfu.edu/webrequest. Include your name, email, department, the URL of the site, and a clear description of what you need. For broken links or content errors on sites you don’t manage, use the feedback form at the bottom of any WFU page instead.
You must connect to the WFU VPN before you can access /wp-admin from off campus. Visit is.wfu.edu for VPN setup instructions. See the Log in to WordPress guide for more details.
Broken Links & Content Errors
Use the website feedback form at the bottom of every WFU page to report it. Include the exact URL where you found the problem and, if possible, the URL of the broken link.
Use Siteimprove to identify broken links, then either update the link or set up a redirect using the 301 Redirects plugin. See the Redirects guide for step-by-step instructions. If the broken link is in your theme’s header or footer, contact the WordPress team.
Access & Permissions
Submit a request via go.wfu.edu/webrequest. The site owner or department head should authorize the request. You’ll need a WFU Google account and must be on campus or connected via VPN. See the Managing Users guide for details on roles and capabilities.
Site Owners and Admins can add and remove users directly from their own sites. See the Managing Users guide for step-by-step instructions on adding editors, authors, and other roles.
New Sites & Domains
Use the Request a New WordPress Site form. See the Create a New WordPress Site guide for the full process and what to expect.
Blocks, Layout & Design
Use a Featured Image to create the large hero image at the top of a page. For full-width images elsewhere, use the Image block or Cover block at full width.
Most non-text blocks can be made wide or full width by clicking the Change Alignment icon.
Add block styles to your groups and columns. This is covered in detail on the Block Backgrounds page.
Browse the Available Blocks guide for the full list with examples. Training sessions are also available at go.wfu.edu/wordpress-training.
Use the Columns block for side-by-side layouts. For full-width sections with backgrounds, wrap content in a Group block first. See the Layout Elements guide for all options.
Images & Media
| Usage | Recommended Size |
|---|---|
| Featured image (page header) | 1400 × 600 px |
| Staff/faculty photo | 500 × 500 px (square) |
| Full-width content image | At least 1400 px wide |
| Mobile header graphic | 640 px wide |
See the Photo Editing guide for tips on resizing and optimizing images, and the Media Library guide for managing uploads.
Check that the file is under 23 MB, is a supported format (.jpg, .png, .gif, .webp), and that you’re connected to the VPN if off campus. See the Media Library guide for more details. If the error persists, submit a request via go.wfu.edu/webrequest with the error message.
Staff & Faculty Pages
Use the Staff custom post type in your dashboard and display them with the Staff List block. See the Staff List guide for setup instructions, photo requirements (500 × 500 px square), and how to use the Role taxonomy to organize listings.
Remove the person from the Staff List block on your page. You may also want to set their staff post to Draft so it no longer appears anywhere on the site. Simply trashing the post is not enough if they are still referenced on a page. See the Staff List guide for details.
Redirects
Use the 301 Redirects plugin in your dashboard to forward old URLs to new locations. For domain-level redirects, contact the WordPress team. See the Redirects guide for step-by-step instructions.
Siteimprove
Siteimprove monitors your site for broken links, misspellings, and accessibility issues. Request access through go.wfu.edu/webrequest. Training sessions are available for first-time users. Each site should have at least one person monitoring its Siteimprove reports.
GoLinks
Manage GoLinks at go.wfu.edu where you can create, edit, and view statistics. If a GoLink’s owner has left WFU, contact the WordPress team to transfer ownership.
Videos & Embeds
For YouTube and Vimeo, just paste the URL on its own line — WordPress auto-embeds it. For Kaltura, see the Working with Kaltura Videos guide. See the full Video/YouTube/Embed guide for all options.
Tables
Use the built-in Table block for simple tables. For sorting, filtering, and CSV import, request the Ninja Tables Pro plugin through go.wfu.edu/webrequest.
Plugins
Submit a plugin request via go.wfu.edu/webrequest. Browse the Plugins guide to see what’s already available in the WFU network. New plugin requests go through our Plugin Approval Process & Policy.
Search
WFU WordPress sites use Google Custom Search Engine, which re-indexes periodically — not instantly. After publishing or deleting content, results may take time to update. You can submit preferred search results through the Recommended Search Result form to influence what appears for specific queries.
Page Protection
Request the WFU Google Authentication Companion plugin through go.wfu.edu/webrequest, or use the built-in password protection. See the Private & Password Protected Pages guide for all options.
Events
Events are managed through the campus events system, not directly in WordPress. Use the Department Events block for department-level events, the University Events block for university-wide events from Localist, or the Localist plugin for deeper integration with the campus events calendar.
