Today’s release includes bug fixes, plugin updates, and accessibility improvements, plus the introduction of a new plugin designed to give you more control over who can see your website.

Understanding Site Visibility

Your site’s visibility setting (found under Settings > Reading) determines who can access the entire site. Most sites remain public, but there are times when limiting access is necessary, such as for internal projects, sensitive information, or testing.

Available Visibility Settings:

  • Public – Anyone can view your site
  • WFU Users Only – Any users with wfu.edu accounts (faculty, staff, students, etc) can view your site- all other users will be redirected to the WFU login page.
  • Site Members Only – Only users with roles can view your site
  • Administrators Only – Only site administrators can view your site.

But what happens if you need to share a private site with someone outside WFU?

Introducing Magic Login

We’re excited to introduce Magic Login, a new plugin that allows you to grant access to private sites without requiring a permanent account or password.

Here’s how it works:

  • You approve specific email addresses in advance.
  • Those users receive a one-time login link via email.
  • They can access the private site without needing WFU credentials.

To request Magic Login for your site, please submit a request through our Web Request Form

What We Learned From Auditing 20,000 Web Pages

We recently engaged with a third party to perform an SEO and Technology Audit, spanning more than 20,000 university web pages. The results gave us valuable insights into who’s using our sites and how they access them.

Who’s visiting WFU websites?

  • 60% of visitors are between 18–24 years old.
  • 22% are in the 45–54 age range.
  • A majority (56%) of our visitors are female.

What devices and browsers do they use?

  • 55% use Google Chrome.
  • 34% use Safari.
  • 58% browse on desktop computers.
  • 41% are on mobile devices.
  • 1% use tablets.

These numbers reinforce the importance of optimizing for mobile, especially for current students who rely heavily on their phones. If you’d like tips, check out our photo editing guide for advice on preparing images for smaller screens.
